The purpose of this work has been to study the inhibitory capacity and anticorrosive behavior offered by zinc tanate pigment (novel pigment) in epoxy paints, for its application in the protection of structural steel. It is hypothesized that the interaction of the pigment zinc tanate with the steel surface generates a mechanism that inhibits corrosion, forming insoluble products; and that this inhibitory mechanism could be equivalent or better than what it produces with conventional zinc chromate and zinc phosphate pigments (conventional pigments). We worked with a zinc tanate pigment, synthesized from the tare powder in previous studies (of defined characteristics). Formulations of epoxy primers have been developed using as pigments zinc tanate, zinc chromate and zinc phosphate; and tests have been performed on them, to compare their corrosion resistance. For the physico-mechanical tests, tests of viscosity, density, fineness, flexion, among others, were carried out. While for corrosion tests, accelerated aging tests in salt spray chamber and wet sulfur dioxide were used.
