Background: The simultaneous presence of ways to correct children using physical violence (physical punishment) and intimate partner violence (IPV) against women, have gained greater attention recently. These two are the most common forms of domestic violence and both have negative consequences independently, but the fact that they are present at the same time suggests that they may have greater consequences on the development of children. Methods: Secondary analytical cross-sectional study to the ENDES 2021-2022 survey in Peru. The co-occurrence of physical punishment and partner violence towards the mother was measured through nine questions corresponding to the Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS2) about physical or sexual violence towards the woman by the partner and how to correct the child using hits and/or slaps by father and/or mother. It was considered a co-occurrence if both were present. The symbolic function was measured by asking the mother questions from the Child Initiated Pretend Play Assessment ChiPPA scale and the Pretend Play Enjoyment Developmental Checklist (PPE-DC). To identify the association, a generalized linear model of the family and Log Poisson link option was used; the results were presented in prevalence ratios. Results: A 12% lower probability of adequate symbolic function was found in those who were exposed to the co-occurrence of physical IPV, and physical punishment compared to those who were not exposed to these (aPR=0.88 95%CI 0.79;0 .99 p=0.029). Only 39.7% of children had an adequate symbolic function. 11.5% of children were found to have co-occurrence. Conclusions: An association was found between co-occurrence of physical IPV towards the mother and physical punishment with less adequate symbolic function in children aged 24 to 71 months. A prevalence of 11.5% of co-occurrence of physical IPV towards the mother and physical punishment and 39.7% of adequate symbolic function was found.
