The present study aimed to estimate the level of phonological awareness among 5-year-old preschool children attending both public and private schools in the Ate-Pachacamac district. The research was of a basic type and descriptive level. The sample was determined using a probabilistic and statistical criterion, with a population consisting of 50 five-year-old preschool students. The instrument used for data collection was the Metalinguistic Skills Test (THM). The findings led to the conclusion that there are significant disparities in metalinguistic skills; the process of dividing words into syllables and phonemic segmentation among students enrolled in both public and private schools in the Ate-Pachacamac district. Regarding gender, there were no significant differences between girls and boys. Lastly, a disparity favoring students enrolled in private educational institutions was confirmed.
