The aim of this paper is to determine the level of knowledge of special basic education teachers about the alternative and augmentative communication systems (SAAC) used for the development of language and communication in children with autism spectrum disorder. To this end, information is collected on the conceptual, procedural and attitudinal knowledge of teachers working in a special basic education centre by means of a questionnaire and a Likert scale. First of all, background information on the topic of this research project is collected, then the autism spectrum disorder is briefly defined to enter the topic of language and its characteristics in the population with autism spectrum disorder - ASD, the alterations of each aspect in this disorder and the augmentative and alternative communication systems used for the intervention and development of language and communication will be reviewed. We conclude that a large percentage of the teachers evaluated have conceptual knowledge about SAAC, most of the teachers have procedural knowledge about the application of SAAC, and only a small percentage have not yet consolidated their knowledge in this area. On the other hand, a high percentage of teachers show a good perception and interest in continuing their training in SAAC.
