The main objective of this study was to determine the nutritional status, body composition and fat distribution population of the Vegan Quan Yin Meditation Center, a descriptive, non-experimental cross sectional study; and to describe the characteristics of the Vegan diet. This will allow for further investigation in this topic. The population consisted of every member of the Quan Yin Meditation Center, in which BMI, fat percentage, lean body mass percentage, and waist circumference was obtained. We used the nonparametric Mann-Whitney U-test. The level of significance for statistical analysis was p=0.05 with its respective degrees of freedom. The analysis was performed with the statistical program SPSS. The results show a prevalence of 77.3% normal BMI. In terms of fat percentage, there is a slight predominance of mildly overweight subjects (38.6%), in comparison with those having an optimal body fat percentage (23.3%). On the other hand it was observed that those with non-optimal body fat percentage (mildly overweight, overweight and obese) outscored those with optimal fat percentage (72.73%); the percentage of lean mass was found acceptable in 52.3%. We found that 72.8% had no cardiovascular risk according to waist circumference. It was concluded that people who eat a vegan diet tend to have a lower BMI. The body fat percentage of vegans depend on the quality of their food (natural vs processed or fried foods). It was confirmed that the vegan diet is associated with a lower cardiovascular risk. We concluded that properly planned vegan diets are healthy, nutritionally adequate, and help maintain a healthy body weight.
