Forest management requires understanding a series of technical and environmental factors, such as the response of plants to the surrounding environment. To date, researches has made some progress; however, in the case of tropical forest species many aspects need to be studied further, including the most suitable transplant techniques and the types of preferred habitats for growth and survival. This study evaluates the growth and survival of saplings of H. oblongifolia transplanted in three habitats (mature forest, plantation and fallow), under two transplantation methods (bare root and soil cake), at CIEFOR Puerto Almendra, Iquitos, Peru. After 14 months of evaluation, results show fairly high survival (mean 78,94%), suggesting that survival is not an impediment to effective management of species. Regarding the growth in height and diameter, higher rates were obtained transplanting saplings in fallow and plantation habitats, which have more favorable conditions than mature forest habitat. No significant difference was found in the growth of saplings between the two transplantation techniques, suggesting that both methods are appropriate for strong survival and growth of H. oblongifolia.
