The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a learner-training program “El Mayantú” to improve third year school students’ speaking skills at Jose Silfo Alván del Castillo secondary school, Iquitos 2017. The research was experimental in type and quasi experimental with control group, pre-test and post-test in design. The population was made up by 57 students enrolled in the 2017 academic year, with a deterministic sample of 36 students. The experimental group (3rd B with 17 students) and the control group (3rd A with 19 students). The data gathering tools used were speaking performance test and rubrics that were validated by experts (96.00 % validity) and reliability rate of 96.00 % (Cronbach’s Alpha score). The results show that the experimental group outperformed the control group by (18.00 > 12.26) as well as in the indicators. For testing the hypothesis, the t-student test for independent variables showed that the program was effective in developing students’ speaking skills in English as p-value was 0.00 < α = 0.05. In conclusion, the Mayantú program improved significantly third grade students’ speaking skills and indicators: body language, grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary at Jose Silfo Alván del Castillo secondary school, Iquitos 2017.
