It was determined that the hypoglycemic activity of the lyophilized aqueous extract of leaves of YACON (Smallanthus sonchifolius) dose 19 mg/Kg and 38 mg/kg of body weight, on the hyperglycemia induced in male albino rats of the strain Holtzman, through experimental study. The extract was orally administered 48 hours after induction of experimental diabetes with alloxan solution 5% (intraperitoneally administered) to albino rats of average weight with glycemic 160-250g previous fasting for 12 hours. Were assigned 40 randomly rats divided into 4 groups , 2 groups received the appropriate dose for the plant under study (19 mg/Kg and 38mg/Kg ) and the 3rd group received saline 0.9% and the 4th received orally the Glibenclamide 5mg solution. After administration of the respective substances, glycaemia was quantified: 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 hours. At the end of the study the euthanasia of all animals was performed by cervical dislocation. It is concluded that the lyophilized aqueous leaf extract YACON (Smallanthus sonchifolius) presented statistically significant at 24 hours post treatment at doses of 38 mg/Kg hypoglycemic activity and a lower percentage of dose of 19 mg/kg.
