It was determined that the hypoglycemic activity of the lyophilized aqueous extract of Geranium ayavacense dose of 6.3 mg / Kg and 12.7 mg / kg body weigh, on the hyperglycemia induced in male albino rats Holtzmann strain by the experimental, randomized study the control group. The extract was orally administered 48 hours after induction of experimental diabetes with alloxan solution 5% (intraperitoneally administered) to albino rats of average weight normoglycemic 160-250 g prior fasting for 12 hours. Were assigned 40 randomly rats distributed into 4 groups two groups received the appropriate dose for the plant under study (6.3 mg / Kg and 12.7 mg / Kg) and the 3rd group received saline 0.9 % and the 4th received orally the Glibenclamide 5 mg solution. After administration of the respective substances, glycaemia was quantified: 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 hours. At study end the euthanasia of all animals was performed by cervical dislocation. It is concluded that the lyophilized aqueous extract of Geranium ayavacense presented statistically significant at 24 hours post treatment at doses of 12.7 mg / kg hypoglycemic activity. (19.4 %) and a lower percentage of dose of 6.3 mg / Kg(15.2 %).
