The irresponsible use of antibiotics in the agricultural sector has been causing Campylobacter resistance. For this reason, the objective of the research was to evaluate the antimicrobial susceptibility of thermotolerant Campylobacter strains isolated from free-range chickens in the city of Iquitos. Two hundred fecal samples were collected (100 farm and 100 free-living). DNA extraction methods, PCR (16S and CadF genes), biochemical tests (hydrolysis of hippurate and indoxyl acetate) and susceptibility tests (erythromycin, azithromycin, nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin, tetracycline, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, gentamicin, amoxicillin + clavulanic acid, imipenem, chloramphenicol) were use. Sixty-nine Campylobacter strains were isolated (41 in free-range chickens and 28 in free-living chickens). In free-living chickens, high levels of resistance to nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin, tetracycline, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, erythromycin and azithromycin were observe; and in free-living chickens, resistance rates were high for tetracycline, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and ciprofloxacin. In addition, Campylobacter spp. strains showed high sensitivity to imipenem and chloramphenicol in both populations, with significant differences (p < 0.05) in five antibiotics. Concluding that Campylobacter spp. was more sensitive to antibiotics in free-living chickens.
