The objective of this work was to isolate the essential oil from the leaves of Croton trinitatis Millsp by hydrodistillation in a Karlsruhe equipment, to characterize it by determining its physicochemical parameters and by mass spectrometry analysis. The results were as follows: density 0,8648 g/cm3, Refractive index 1,4542, the colored reactions were positive for alcohols. The chromatogram revealed the presence of 22 components: 4 monoterpenes, 7 sesquiterpenes, 1 alcoholic diterpene, 2 phenolic aromatic derivatives (Coumarins), 8 fatty acid derivatives. The most abundant components were: hexadecanoic acid ethyl ester 34,86%, coumarin 12,90%, linolenic acid ethyl ester 11,64%, ethyl-9-hexadecanoate 8,52%, octadecanoic acid ethyl ester 4,76%, β-caryophyllene 4,28% and linalyl butyrate 2,94%. This proves that the essential oil is associated with lipid substances and chlorophyll (Phytol) decomposition products that contribute as sui generis odor fixers.
