Objective: To determine sociodemographic and maternal factors related to the abandonment of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) at the San Juan Health Center in 2018. Materials and methods: Observational, analytical, case-control and retrospective study. The formula for cases and controls was used in the calculation of the sample size, made up of 180 participants (60 cases and 120 controls). Documentary analysis of clinical histories and direct survey of the mothers included in the study were carried out. The information was processed with the statistical software EPI INFO version 7.2.2.6. Results: Of the 180 women, the predominant age was 15-19, with an average of 25 years old. Marital status, urban background, secondary education, homemaker and low income were the most frequent sociodemographic characteristics. It was determined that after the abandonment of the EBF, 35% was for early complementary feeding, 33.33% for artificial lactation and 31.67% for mixed lactation. Most mothers were multiparous, delivered vaginally, had adequate pregnancy control, were given information about the benefits of EBF, and all had a favorable attitude toward EBF. More than half reported nipple cracks and perceived low breast milk production. Most newborns began breastfeeding before the hour, and health workers were the main influence on leaving EBF. Conclusions: It was concluded that risk factors for abandonment of exclusive breastfeeding are: inadequate prenatal control, starting breastfeeding after the hour, the influence of health personnel, the presence of breast pathology, the sensation of low milk production, cesarean delivery, multiparity and the history of abandonment of exclusive breastfeeding in the previous child.
