BACKGROUND: Surgical site infection is considered the second cause of hospital infection after urinary tract infections1,2,3; and represents 30% to 35% of postoperative complications of an appendectomy4. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of surgical site infection and associated risk factors in appendectomy patients in a level III hospital in the city of Iquitos from 2017 to 2019. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Quantitative study, case-control design, analytical, observational, transversal and retrospective, whose population is made up of appendectomized patients from a level III hospital in the city of Iquitos from 2017 to 2019; from which a sample of 252 patients was obtained. Factors related to the patient and the operative act were studied. Data were collected by means of an instrument and subsequently analyzed in Excel and SPSS v25. The Chi square test was used with a confidence of 95% and significance of p <0.05%. RESULTS: The prevalence of surgical site infection in appendectomy patients was 35.3%. Have diabetes, present a NNIS 1 and 2 risk classification, a time of illness greater than 3 days, a duration of intervention greater than 60 minutes, hospital stay greater than 3 days, postoperative diagnosis of acute perforated appendicitis, a leukocyte count from 10,000 cells / mm3 to> 20,000 cells / mm3 and the use of a drain are associated risk factors for developing surgical site infection (p-value = <0.005). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of the study is higher than those obtained in other investigations. The development of surgical site infection is multifactorial.
