Introduction: Currently the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that more than 41.8% of pregnant women in the world have anemia, in this sense, many governments, including ours, have seen the urgent need to develop effective and sustainable interventions. Study Objective: To determine if maternal anemia is a risk factor for preterm delivery and low birth weight at the Iquitos Cesar Garayar Garcia Hospital, 2018. Materials and methods: A retrospective, analytical investigation of cases and controls was carried out through the collection of information from pregnant women at the Gyneco-Obstetrics Service of the Iquitos César Garayar García Hospital during the year 2018, with the review of clinical histories and the instrument used in the study was the "Data Collection Card". Results: Pregnant women had an overall average haemoglobin of 11.2 g/dL. The average age of the controls was 25 years and of the cases was 24. In relation to the number of pre-natal controls, 46.7% of the pregnant controls had 6 or more unlike the pregnant cases which reached 35.5%. Regarding the antepartum antepartum history, 11.8% of the controls presented it during their last pregnancy compared to 13.2% of the cases. On the history of low birth weight, 13.2% were for controls compared to 14.7% of cases. The average gestational age in controls was 36 weeks while in the case group it was 35 weeks. The average newborn weight in the controls was 2489 grams while in the cases it was 2258 grams. The Chi2 value indicates that there is a statistically significant association between newborn weight and anemia. The Odds Ratio (OR), on the other hand, indicates that pregnant women with anemia have 3 times the risk of presenting low or very low birth weight. The correlation between age and haemoglobin level was 20% (P = 0.002). The value of Chi2 indicates that there is a statistically significant association between preterm labor and anemia. The Odds Ratio (OR), on the other hand, indicates that pregnant women with anemia are 8 times more likely to have a preterm delivery. Conclusions The clinical and epidemiological characteristics of anaemic pregnant women are not related to low birth weight or preterm delivery. There is a statistically significant association between newborn weight and anemia. The Odds Ratio indicates that pregnant women with anemia have 3 times the risk of having a child with low or very low birth weight. There is a statistically significant association between preterm delivery and anaemia. The Odds Ratio tells us that pregnant women with anemia are 8 times more likely to have a preterm delivery.
