OBJECTIVE: Determine the cost assumed by the family for the treatment of respiratory infections in children under 5 years of age hospitalized in a third level MINSA hospital. 2019. METHODOLOGY: 139 children under 5 years hospitalized for respiratory infections were enrolled in a third level MINSA hospital. 2019. A structured survey containing questions related to costs, epidemiological, clinical and laboratory characteristics was applied. For the analysis of the bacterial etiological agent, a nasopharyngeal swab sample was taken and the culture was carried out to identify bacterial agents, the samples were processed in the Amazon rainforest laboratories. For the cost analysis, the micro-costing technique (bottom-up) was used. The direct cost was calculated from the expenses of medicines, auxiliary examinations and hospitalization and the indirect cost from the expenses in food, transportation and personal use items assumed by the family. RESULTS: The treatment costs assumed by the family of 139 children under 5 years of age hospitalized for respiratory infections in a MINSA hospital were evaluated. 2019, with an average age of 1 year, range (12 months to 24 months), 61% male and 100% with Comprehensive Health Insurance (SIS). The average hospitalization time was 3 days. The total cost percapita was of 49.9 soles, of which the direct cost was 6 soles and the indirect cost was 43.9 soles. A case of pneumococcus was isolated and the main symptom was dyspnea CONCLUSION: There is a directly proportional relationship between the direct and indirect costs assumed by the family and the hospitalization time of children under 5 years. These costs were not associated with the epidemiological, clinical or laboratory characteristics of respiratory infections.
