The objective was to evaluate the effect of an educational intervention on the knowledge and practice of basic indoor sanitation: waters, garbage and excreta, in mothers of the El Porvenir Pampachica Human Settlement in Iquitos in 2020. The study is quantitative, quasi-experimental. With a pre and posttest design with a single group, the sample was 30 mothers. The techniques were the home visit, observation, educational and demonstrative sessions and the instruments were the knowledge questionnaire on basic indoor sanitation (Validity 97.6% and reliability 95.0%) and an observation guide (Validity 98.6% and Reliability 96.0%). The SPSS version 24.0 was used, the inferential test was the Wilcoxón Range, with α = 0.05 and a 95% confidence level. The study determined that before the educational intervention 53.3% of mothers had regular knowledge about basic sanitation: waters, garbages and excretas, and afterwards 63.3% achieved good knowledge; likewise, before the educational intervention, 66.7% mothers performed unacceptable practices of basic sanitation within the home and after the educational intervention, 76.7% achieved acceptable practices. When applying the Wilcoxon Rank = - 4,799; p = 0.000, allowed to determine the positive effect on knowledge and Wilcoxón rank = - 4.018; p = 0.000), allowed to determine the positive effect on basic sanitation practices. The study concluded that the intervention is effective in the knowledge and practice of basic indoor sanitation.
