The study had two objectives: 1) establish methods of producing paiche hatchlings (Arapaima gigas) through induced reproduction, and 2) evaluate the effect of two different feeding rates and three different feeding frequencies on the increase in weight and length of A. gigas fingerlings. For the first objective, hormonal induction treatment of mature fish was carried out twice at the Fernando Alcántara Bocanegra Research Center of the IIAP. The first treatment was realized from January to June 2008, using 12 pairs of adult paiche (5 years old), previously marked with chips and sexed by the specific EIA method for vitellogenin. The fish were distributed in 12 earthen ponds of 150 m2 and subjected to hormonal induction monthly. Three doses of carp pituitary extract (CPE) were evaluated in triplicate: T1 = 2 mg CPE, T2 = 4 mg CPE, and T3 = 8 mg CPE / kg body mass, plus a control treatment (TO = physiological saline + 0 mg CPE / kg body mass). The second treatment was carried out from August to December 2009 in four 1,000 m2 ponds with five adult paiche in each (1 fish / 200 m2), for a total of 20 fish (6 years old), sexed and marked with electromagnetic chips. For this treatment, a monthly dose of 5 mg CPE / kg body mass was applied to males and 10 mg CPE / kg body mass weight to females, but conditioning the sex ratio of each pond (T1 = 1.5 ♂: 1 ♀ and T2 = 1 ♂: 1.5 ♀). In both experiences, the paiche were fed fresh-frozen fish, using a feed rate equivalent to 2% of body biomass. No positive results were obtained in the first experience, while in the second experience a female of T1 produced two (2) reproductive events (in September and October 2009). To achieve the second objective, 54 fingerlings (12 g and 10 cm respective average weight and average length) were used, with two daily feeding rates (5% and 7%) and three food frequencies (2, 4, and 6 times / day) for a period of 60 days. Feeding frequency did not significantly influence (P> 0.05) the evaluated parameters of growth, feed conversion and survival. However, the ANOVA conducted indicated that the variable feed rate did have significant effect (P <0.05) on at least two parameters: i) weight gain and ii) gain in length. The fish that obtained the most weight gain were those that were in the F4T5 and F2T5 combinations, while the fish with the lowest weight gain were those found in F2T7. A survival rates were between 77.8 to 100%. The fish of the F2T5 treatment presented the most adequate values of specific growth (SGR) and feed conversion (FCR).
