The in vitro antibacterial activity of extracts of Tabernaemontana species on staphylococcus aureus and pseudomonas aeruginosa strains, was evaluateethanolic extracts were obtained from leaves, cortex and roots of four Tabernaemontana species (T. macrocalyx, T: heterophylla, T. maxima and T. markgrafiana). The best yield for the extract production was observed using leaves of the T. maxima and T. markgrafiana (20.6 and 20.4 %, respectively). The phytochemical screening of 12 ethanolic extracts showed that alkaloids were in the highest concentrations; however, in some extracts were showed the presence of other metabolites with posible antimicrobial activity such as amines and aminoacids, flavones, triterpens, etc. The in vitro antibacterial activity of the extracts against five Staphylococcus aureus and five Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains was determined for agar diffusion method (Kirby – Bauer technic). It was observed that T. maxima and T. markgrafiana showed activity againstS. aureus and P. aeruginosa. The leavesof T. heterophylla do not showed activity against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa.
