INTRODUCTION: Antioxidants are chemicals that inactivate or inhibit free radical production, preventing the deterioration in the cells. Peru has many plant species with not substantial studies and one of these species is Physalis angulata L. (ground cherry). AIM: To determine the in vitro antioxidant activity and total polyphenol concentration in Physalis angulata L. (ground cherry) roots of. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The plant sample was collected, dried, crushed and macerated in ethanol for 15 days, the dry extract obtained was reduced using a rotary evaporator with controlled temperature and pressure, at concentrations of 1250, 2500, 5000, and 10,000 μg / mL for the determination of antioxidant activity by the method of DPPH, readings are performed in the spectrophotometer UV / Visible to 517nm. The determination of concentration of total polyphenols was performed first by Catequina´s standard curve, then the amount of phenolic compounds produced during the reaction was determined by adding 1 ml of standard sample, and control plant sample in a polystyrene cuvette and proceeded to read the absorbance by spectrophotometer at 700nm. The sample, control and standard were read at the same time to get accurate results. RESULTS: The antioxidant capacity measured as IC50 (inhibitory concentration 50) with the highest percentage of inhibition against the DPPH radical was 87,416 ± 1,593 to the concentration of 10000 μg, with IC50 values of 5460 ± 95.2459. The concentration of phenolic compounds was measured to 27.129 0.050 mg Cat/g of extract. CONCLUSION: Ethanol extract of the root of Physalis angulata L. presented better antioxidant activity was 10,000 μg, also presented high concentration of total polyphenols.
