In Peru, about 2.4 million households use some of biomass for cooking and heating the house in traditional stoves. This results in inefficient use of fuels from renewable resources due to the low energy efficiency of open fires, high emissions of greenhouse gases and pollutants (gases and particles): indoor and open pit. This creates negative effects on the health of young children, women and the environment. In Cusco, the most used in cooking fuel (except gas and electricity) are firewood and dung, further distinguished in rural areas, where the use of wood reaches 69% of households and 30% use dung. Different government agencies and other nonprofit organizations are conducting programs implementation of improved stoves. However, there is no information on the performance of these that allows for a selection of the best technology in terms of energy efficiency and reduction of exposure to contaminants. There are few monitoring programs and monitoring after implementation of improved stoves with which they can determine the success of the program in terms of acceptance and adoption of these technologies so that the impact of these programs can not be determined with certainty. There is a wide variety of models of improved stoves available, with significant variations from the physical aspect, building materials, cost and quantities offered. However, only some of them, you have some sort of information on their energy efficiency, acceptability of the population and emissions generated, aspects that are crucial to achieving the goals of implementing programs related to health protection and the environment. Experience suggests that while the government provides initial support for technological change, delivering stoves and gas tanks, the families can not afford the fuel once this is over, in rural areas this fact is the main obstacle to the use of kitchens gas, especially in areas where firewood can be collected and no cost.
