Introduction: Congenital malformations are conceptualized as functional morphological defects and degenerations that appear at birth that may have genetic, environmental or idiopathic causes. Currently, congenital malformations (CM) are one of the major perinatal health problems in our country due to their high associated fetal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. The known prevalence of malformations is known to range between 1.5 to 4%, which can rise to 7% in the first year of life. In Peru, in 2023, congenital malformations, deformities and chromosomal anomalies took fourth place within the groups of causes of fetal death. The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with certain congenital malformations in newborns at the Regional Hospital of Cusco, 20192023. Materials and methods: The methodology was quantitative, retrospective, cross-sectional, analytical, correlational – cases and controls. The technique was observation whose instrument is based on documentary observation of clinical records of newborns. Results: The research analyzed 82 cases and 82 controls of patients with or without presence of congenital malformations from which the following maternal characteristics were obtained: first, extreme age (OR = 1.513, CI = 0.727-3.147, p = 0.267) with 23.2%, second, origin outside the province of Cusco (OR = 4.539, CI = 2.333-8.829, p < 0.001) with 56.7%, third, presence of chronic disease (OR = 1.060, CI = 0.543 - 2.069, p = 0.865) with 29.9%, fourth, obesity (OR = 0.379, CI = 0.166 - 0.862, p = 0.018) with 19.5%, fifth, exposure to environmental factors (OR = 3.809, CI = 1.982 - 2.069, p = 0.018) with 19.5%, and fourth, exposure to environmental factors (OR = 3.809, CI = 1.982 - 2.069, p = 0.018) with 19.5%, and fifth ...%. 7.321, p<0.001) with 56.1%, sixth mother with harmful habits (OR=4.080, CI=1.094 – 15.215, p=0.025) with 8.5% and seventh family history of congenital malformations (OR=2.051, CI=0.365 – 11.522, p=0.682) with 3.7%; Regarding the characteristics during pregnancy, we have first the mothers who attended prenatal check-ups (OR = 7.56, CI = 0.909 - 62.901, p = 0.064) with 91.5%, second illnesses during pregnancy (OR = 1.554, CI = 0.839 - 2.877, p = 0.160) with 3.8% and third the consumption of medications during pregnancy (OR = 1.837, CI = 0.951 - 3.548, p = 0.069) with 49.9%, finally regarding the characteristics of the newborn we have that the most frequent gender was male (OR = 0.951, CI = 0.51-1.772, p = 0.874) with 59.1%. Conclusions: It was determined that originating from another province, exposure to environmental factors and mothers with harmful habits are statistically considered risk factors for the development of congenital malformations.
