Objective: Determine if anemia in the third trimester of pregnancy is a risk factor for developing premature birth at the Hospital Regional of Cusco, 2022. Methods: The study is a retrospective cohort type with a total sample of 206 pregnant patients at 3,400 meters of altitude who attended the gynecology-obstetrics service of the Regional Hospital of Cusco in the year 2022. Data on gestational age, age, weight were obtained, the height and parity of the pregnant women, in addition to the hemoglobin value of the third trimester, considering anemia a hemoglobin value <13.4 g/dL. The chi-square test and the Relative Risk were applied to demonstrate the relationship of the variables. Results: The average age was 27.41 +/- 4.43 years, the BMI was 23.41 +/- 1.75 kg/m2 and the parity was 1 child. The average hemoglobin was 13.57 +/- 1.47 g/dL. The incidence of premature births in the group of patients with anemia was 24.44% and in patients who did not have anemia 48.27%. In the multivariate analysis of the variables, a significant association was found between severe anemia and premature birth. RR = 2.0, 95% CI [0.500-7.997], p = 0.001. Conclusions: Mild anemia and moderate anemia do not act as a risk factor for the development of preterm birth, while severe anemia does double the probability of developing very preterm birth.
