Natural disasters are one of the main channels through which the climate interacts with the economy. In Peru, the number of deaths is in the range of between 100 and 500 people per year, second in Latin America. To mitigate the risks, and provide a better response and rehabilitation and reconstruction capacity in the event of natural disasters, the Fund for Interventions in the Event of Natural Disasters - FONDES was created in 2016, which provides monetary transfers to severely affected districts. at the national level. In this context, the research aims to study the impact of FONDES on the economic recovery of population centers affected by natural disasters in Peru during the period 2018-2020. The research is of an applied type, has a quantitative approach, a non-experimental design and a descriptive-correlational scope. Innovative night light data from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) are used as a proxy for GDP at the Population Center level, together with information extracted from the FONDES Financing Request Approval Acts and from the INEI Population Centers Consultation System. . To assess the impact, a generalized differences-in-differences model is used. The results suggest that an increase in the investment of FONDES per capita in 10,000 soles, generates an increase in night lights by 7.3%. In the medium term, an increase of 10,000 soles per capita in FONDES investment generates a 3.1% increase in night lights after two years.
