The objective of this research was to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial effect of Citrus limon essential oil in different concentrations on Streptococcus mutans. Being the type of Experimental in vitro, Prospective, longitudinal cut study. For this study, different concentrations (50%, 75% and 100%) of the essential oil Citrus limon were used on Streptococcus mutans, as a culture medium, Mueller Hinton Agar was used using the diffusion technique method. To determine the antibacterial effectiveness, the diameter of the inhibition halos was measured at 24, 48 and 72 hours in four periods of installation, using the Duraffourd scale. The diameters of inhibition halos for the essential oil Citrus limon was of 6.50 mm at 50%, 13.57 mm at 75%, 14.78 mm at 100%, showing that 75% and 100% show antibacterial effectiveness as sensitive (+) and very sensitive (++). With this study it has been determined that when using the essential oil Citrus limon at the 50% concentration, its antibacterial effect is null (-) against the Streptococcus mutans ATCC®25175TM while at the concentrations used at 75% and 100% show differences statistics with very close values regarding its antibacterial effect, however under the three times of evaluation using the 75% Citrus limon essential oil, it is observed that there is a significant growth of the inhibitory halo superior to that observed at 100%.
