This research investigates the determinants of labor market transitions in the Southern Macro Región during the 2013-2015 period. Current research has shown that cross-sectional and time series methods have the disadvantage of generating little information about the dynamic behavior of an individual in time. We use a longitudinal approach that will allow us to know the behavior of individuals through their labor market transitions. We evaluate the impact of human capital and individual characteristics in the transition from one working state to another. We use data from the National Household Survey (ENAHO) to estimate two discrete dependent variable models: The multinomial and random effects logit. Additionally, we check the predictions of the Search and Matching theory by estimating the effect of human capital on two sectors of the labor force: The skilled and unskilled sector. The results show that it is 1.22 times more likely that a woman will be unemployed compared to a man. It is 5.70 times more likely that a person residing in the urban area will be unemployed compared to a person residing in the rural area. An increase in age reduces the probability of moving to unemployment by a factor of 0.84 and it is more likely that a person in the skilled sector will remain employed compared to a person in the unskilled sector.
