Introduction: Anemia is a public health indicator that is related to morbidity and mortality rates of the most vulnerable population groups, such as pregnant women, an adequate diagnosis and management of anemia will be important in the prevention of these complications. Objective: To determine what is the association between anemia and complications in pregnancy and the puerperium in the Antonio Lorena del Cusco Contingency Hospital during 2019. Methods: It is an observational, analytical case-control study, longitudinal and retrospective. Conducted at the Antonio Lorena del Cusco Contingency Hospital during 2019, 345 patients who met the exclusion and inclusion criteria were included, having a case-control ratio of 1: 2 (115 cases and 230 controls), the data was collected from the medical records, as for the hemoglobin value obtained, the respective index in relation to height was applied. The data were transferred to Excel and processed in the statistical package STATA 15.0. Results: It is obtained that the relationship of anemia with complications in pregnancy and in the puerperium was statistically significant (P: 0.001) and that the presence of anemia increases the risk of complications 6 times (OR: 6, 95% CI : 3.5 - 10.3) among the complications there is; urinary tract infection (OR: 2.92, 95% CI: 1.32 - 6.47, P: 0.00), Premature rupture of membranes (OR: 5, 95% CI: 2 - 11, P: <0.001), Oligohydramnios (OR; 4.8 , 95% CI: 1.8 - 13.63, P <0.001), also that the prevalence of anemia in pregnant women and postpartum women at Hospital Lorena del Cusco was 29.07%. Conclusion: It was found that anemia is related to complications within the gestation in which the urinary tract infection, premature rupture of membranes and the presence of oligohydramnios is found, so its prevention will be important. Likewise, the prevalence of anemia remains high.
