Background: Ischemic stroke or cerebral infarction is a frequent disease whose risk factors have been widely studied, however, almost all studies have been carried out in populations at an altitude less than 2000 meters above sea level. In routine clinical practice, blood viscosity is only assessed through indirect methods (hematocrit or erythrocyte sedimentation rate) without objective and direct measurement of blood viscosity in the laboratories of the Cusco hospitals. Likewise, there is no clear relationship between the association of blood viscosity and cerebral infarction with the functional prognosis of patients. The study was conducted between November 2019 to June 2021 for reasons related to the pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional associative study was carried out in a population with cerebral infarction, who were followed up at three months. All patients had their blood viscosity level measured at admission and their functional prognosis was evaluated at three months using the modified Rankin scale, to assess whether high viscosity is associated with a worse functional prognosis at the end of the period. said period. The validation of the scale in Spanish will be used for telephone use, due to the contingency due to COVID-19. Results: It was found that high blood viscosity has a RR of 0.6 in the functional prognosis of patients who suffered an ischemic cerebral infarction. Conclusions: A high blood viscosity predisposes to the development of ischemic cerebral infarction, but has a protective effect in those patients who already had the infarction on their functional prognosis.
