The objective of the present study is to evaluate the quality of the water of the Vilcanota River and its influence on the aquatic biota in the sector from km 104 to 114 of the Machupicchu Historical Sanctuary, Cusco, considering the importance it has for the conservation of the aquatic environment, because it’s located into a Protected Natural Area. The research that has been developed is of a basic and descriptive type, with a non- experimental design, carried out with a sample of six monitoring points located before and after Machupicchu Pueblo, for seven non-consecutive months from September 2022 to August 2023. Among the techniques used are observation, monitoring, laboratory analysis, calculation of the Environmental Quality Index of Surface Water Resources and biological indices, and as instruments those proposed by the National Protocol for Monitoring the Quality of Surface Water Resources were used. To determine the influence of water quality on aquatic biota, range-abundance curves were constructed, where macroinvertebrate species that provide information on the degree of disturbance of the environment were identified. The water of the section of the Vilcanota river evaluated has a quality between fair to poor, with the greatest contaminant being organic matter, so the macroinvertebrate communities present along the river section are mostly dominated by the species Chironomus sp., which is characterized by being tolerant to organic contamination. Therefore, it is concluded that the decrease in river water quality influences the diversity of aquatic biota, which is lower when the degree of pollution is high.
