Caries Assessment Spectrum and Treatment index (CAST) is a new evaluation instrument that covers the progression of the decay lesion considering from a healthy tooth (code 0), sealants (code 1), restorations (code 2), lesions in the enamel (code 3) and dentine (code 4 and 5), pulping commitment (code 6), fistulae (code 7) to the loss of the piece (code 8), others (code 9) in the nine advanced codes. OBJECTIVE: Identify the prevalence and degree of severity of carious lesions according to the CAST index in patients between 6 and 10 years of age belonging to the SIS of the Hospital of Quillabamba, January to April 2018. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 272 children, 139 male sex and 132 female sex, between 6 to 10 years of age, chosen according to the inclusión and exclusión criteria by non-probabilistic sampling for finite population of the Hospital of Quillabamba District of the Convention department Cusco. Patients were examined using the CAST index. RESULTS: It can be seen that the prevalence of caries in patients evaluated at 6 to 10 years was 91.1%. The percentage according to its codes shows that code 4 was the major and the minor the code 1 in the temporary dentition; the major code was 1 in permanent teeth. According to its codes in temporary teeth according to faces, mesial presents the highest percentage in the code 0, most frequently affectation is code 4, likewise the occlusal face the highest percentage is the code 4, in the distal face the higher percentage was the codes 4, in the vestibular face was the code 0, within the codes of affectation was the code 3, in the lingual face was the code 0, within the affectation the most frequent was the code 8. It also shows the degree of severity of patients assessed with a higher percentage eof the degree of morbidity however, the degree of pre-morbidity represents a minimum percentage. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of general caries for this research using the CAST index was 91.9%. As for the degree of severity indicated for the CAST index can be concluded, that the degree of morbidity represented the highest percentage and the lowest percentage was for the degree of premorbidity. The CAST index can be reliably applied in epidemiological studies on these ages.
