BACKGROUND: Developmental dysplasia of the hip is an alteration of the components of the hip joint. The diagnosis when it is late or not carried out, generates an unfavorable prognosis in the short and long term. METHOD: Non-experimental, observational, analytical-correlational study with validation of a diagnostic test; being retrospective of cross section. The information will be processed in SPSS software to obtain sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value, positive and negative likelihood ratio, and ROC curve. RESULTS: Of the 95 infants considered in the sample, 31.6% of the total had pathological diagnosis for developmental dysplasia of the hip on ultrasound, while 38.9% of the total had on radiography. A sensitivity of 56%, specificity 84%, PPV 70%, NPV 75%, positive likelihood ratio 3.6 was obtained; negative likelihood ratio 0.52 for hip ultrasound as a diagnostic test for developmental dysplasia of the hip, in addition to a ROC curve of 0.706, giving it valid discriminatory power. CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasonography turned out to have adequate sensitivity, specificity, predictive values and likelihood ratio in infants with suspected developmental dysplasia of the hip, being ideal for determining a high possibility of early diagnosis in infants, which is later confirmed when necessary with hip x-ray.
