Introduction: Self-medication is a public health problem that is observed daily in our environment, and the pediatric population is the most vulnerable since this decision is not autonomous but imposed by parents called “self-medication by proxy.” Objective: Determine the factors related to self-medication by parents in children under 5 years of age with acute diarrheal diseases who are treated at the Adolfo Guevara Velasco National Hospital, 2024. Materials and methods: Observational, cross-sectional, relational and prospective study, a survey validated by experts was applied anonymously and data was collected from 276 parents on the child's age, demographic and social data of the parents, type of diarrhea and drug. more used. It was divided into two groups, with 138 groups that self-medicated and 138 those that did not. Univariate, bivariate and Poisson regression analysis were performed to establish a relationship between the variables. Results: From the sample of 276 parents, the factors related to self-medication of children under 5 years of age with acute diarrheal diseases were the age of the child from 3 to 5 years (PRa: 2.20; IC95%:1.664 - 2.963), level secondary education (PRa: 1.32; IC95%:1.064 - 1.649), having 2 or more children (PRa: 1.40; IC95%:1.103- 1.179). Conclusions: The factors related to self-medication of children under 5 years of age with acute diarrheal diseases at the Adolfo Guevara Velasco National Hospital, 2024 were the age of the child from 3 to 5 years, secondary educational level and having 2 or more children.
