During the last decade, the central government has made large cash transfers to local governments as part of a process of fiscal decentralization; however, no substantial reductions in monetary or multidimensional poverty have been observed in the national territory. Under this scenario, the research seeks to identify the effect of municipal public spending on multidimensional poverty in the province of Quispicanchi for the period 2007-2019. We use two main data sources: (1) The INEI National Household Survey that provides detailed information on the indicators required to estimate the multidimensional poverty level in the districts of the Quispicanchi province. (2) The MEF Consulta Amigable platform with information on public spending by district and by year. We use an instrumental variable strategy to recover the causal effect of public spending on multidimensional poverty. We use fiscal decentralization in the 2012-2015 period as an instrument. The research is of an applied type, with a quantitative approach, non- experimental design, and explanatory scope. The main results find a reduction in the intensity of multidimensional poverty. In particular, an increase of 1,000 soles per capita in public spending can reduce the intensity of multidimensional poverty by 3.6%. This result suggests that the presence of public spending on investment programs and projects can reduce the number of deprivations experienced by the poorest in the province of Quispicanchi. On the other hand, an important effect on the incidence of multidimensional poverty has not been identified.
