Background: The urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most frequent bacterial infections in children, it is important the diagnosis and the timely treatment to avoid complications. Urinalysis is useful to make a presumptive diagnosis of UTI and urine culture confirms it. Multiple studies demonstrate the validity of uroanalysis tests in a dipstick, mainly leukocyte esterase (EL) and nitrites (NIT), which have sensitivity and specificity similar to the microscopic study, in addition the diagnostic interest lies in its predictive value. Methods: A transversal descriptive study of analytical validation, observational with patients younger than 14 years, both male and female. A data collection form will be used as an instrument, and formulas will be applied for sensitivity, specificity, VPP and VPN for each test evaluated, such as EL, nitrites and EL plus nitrites. Results: Of 101 urine samples, 45.5% presented with UTI, when analyzing and performing the operations for validity and safety, it was reported that EL was composed of 100% sensitivity, specificity of 72.7%, PPV of 75.4% and NPV of 100%. NIT sensitive sensitivity 80.4%, specificity 83.6%, PPV of 80.4% and NPV of 83.6%. Finally, the combined analysis of EL and NIT of sensitivity 80.4%, specificity of 96.4%, PPV of 94.9% and NPV of 85.5%. Conclusions: The test strip is a valid and safe test for the diagnosis of UTI in children, the specificity and the predictive values increase when EL and NIT are evaluated together.
