OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of self-perceived periodontal disease in 12- year-old schoolchildren in the district of Wanchaq, Cusco 2018. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present research work has the descriptive, quantitative, cross-sectional design. It was applied to a sample constituted by 254 epidemiological records of 12-year-old schoolchildren from the educational centers of the Wanchaq district. The type of sampling was probabilistic, by fixed proportionality and, finally, simple random. A database was developed in Excel Software and later the SPSS Program ver. 20 to the respective statistical analysis. RESULTS: The prevalence of self-reported periodontal disease by Self Report in 12- year-old schoolchildren was 86.2%, and according to sex was higher in females (45.7%) in relation to males (40.6%). The prevalence of periodontal disease using the Russell Index was 55.9% and according to sex was higher in the male sex (29.9%), in relation to the female sex (26.0%). The levels of periodontal disease using the Russell Index according to sex was, in the male sex, the highest percentage was simple gingivitis and in the female sex it was the clinically normal support tissue this association was significant. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that the prevalence of self-reported periodontal disease by Self Report was 86.2% and the prevalence of periodontal disease using the Russell Index was 55.9%.
