The study cuyo objective is to identify the general characteristics of the study population and the characterization of self-medication in the residents of the neighborhood unit of Santiago, Cusco-2015. Study that was done was: Descriptive, prospective and transversal. The study sample is 92 people from the neighborhood unit of Santiago. The technique used was the interview and the instrument was a survey. The findings were within the general characteristics 64.1% of the residents are between 31-40 years old, 73.9% were female, 76.1% are married (as), 91.3% with a degree of higher level, 66.3% in their religion is Catholic, 61.9% with an income 1000-1500 monthly suns. The characteristic of self-medication in people of the Neighborhood Unit Santiago was that the vast majority have a history of self-medicating (52.2%) and they do so on their most three more times a month (53.3%). Because the conditions that led to its self-medication is cold (56.5%) The drug used most often is the analgesic (53.3%). Among them we Paracetamol (36.9%). The antibiotic is used in self-medication amoxicillin (29.3%). Antipyretic then that job is ibuprofen (36.9%). Also sparingly anxiolytic that employment is Diazepam (3.3%). The drug is orally (94.5%). Where the medicines are purchased without a prescription at a pharmacy it is generally (66.3%). The influence to self- medicate is by close relatives (39.1%). The condition of purchasing drugs is mostly because someone recommended them (45.6%). The information they receive about drugs are given to a large majority in the pharmacy (65.2%) where they go to buy medicines.
