Tea production in the Huayopata district has a long historical tradition, with plantations since 1928, and tea factories since 1943. It has also come to represent more than 80% of tea production in all of Peru. Given its economic importance for the population of the district, this research aims to determine the impact of tea production on the Human Development Index of the Huayopata district during the period 2003-2019. The research has a descriptive- correlational scope and a non-experimental-longitudinal design with a quantitative approach. Information from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the MIDAGRI Agricultural Statistics Directorate is used to estimate a synthetic control model in line with (Abadie, 2021). The main results of the research find that tea production generated an increase of 0.018 points in the HDI between 2008-2015, and a subsequent reduction of 0.015 points between 2016-2019. These results suggest that tea production had a significant competitive advantage, but was later displaced by competitive export products such as coffee and cocoa. It is also found that the production of tea generated an increase of 66 soles in per capita family income for the period 2008-2015, generating important returns for the inhabitants of the district.
