The aim of this study was to compare adhesion of the bonding-layer formed by the enamel-adhesive- cementing agent- metal braces. In order to do this, three conditioning protocols which were at 15, 20 seconds, and self-conditioning. A quasi-experimental design, quantitative approach and cross-sectional study was conducted. The sample was formed by 159 bicuspids, extracted for orthodontic reasons, with no defects in the enamel. In addition, sub-groups of 53 teeth were formed. The results showed that conditioning at 20 seconds had a higher adhesive strength. Next was self -conditioning, and then conditioning at 15 seconds. The 20 second conditioning method has a mean of 1,7, and a standard deviation of 0,5. The numbers for the self-conditioning method were 2,4, and,.6 respectively; the values for the 20 second method were 3,5, and 0,4, respectively. The ARI index located in the 15 second conditioning method in (ARI 2) more than half of the adhesive on the enamel surface. In the 20 second conditioning method (ARI 0) there was no adhesive left on the enamel surface. In the self-conditioning technique (ARI 2) more than half of the adhesive remained on the enamel surface of the samples. A p=0.49>0,05 value was obtained. There were no statistical differences among the evaluated groups. It was concluded that the 20 second conditioning technique was more acceptable and more protective from damage to the enamel surface.
