Urban wastewater represents one of the biggest environmental problems in Cusco, being organic matter the main pollutant. In response to the need to innovate with clean technologies, the present work aims to evaluate the efficiency of rhizobacteria isolated from Scirpus californicus and Typha dominguensis in the reduction of COD in wastewater under laboratory conditions. The methodology consisted of extracting rhizospheric soil from both species of cattails located in the Lucre - Huacarpay wetland, preserved in 10% peptone water and taken to the laboratory for proliferation in culture, and for examining the Gram stain status and morphological features of bacteria. The wastewater sample was obtained at the San Jeronimo Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) - Cusco after screening; its initial COD concentration was 820.98 mg/l and BOD 552 mg/l. The wastewater was subjected to treatments with rhizobacteria by evaluating three factors: dose (1%v/v and 2%v/v), contact time (3 and 5 days) and temperature (20°C and 30°C). A 2 factorial design with central points (1.5%v/v dose, 4 days and 25°C) was used for the analysis. The results of COD reduction ranged from 15% to 51% for rhizobacteria isolated from Typha dominguensis and 18% to 49% for rhizobacteria isolated from Scirpus californicus. For BOD, 70% reduction was obtained at 30°C treatment in both species. In conclusion, significant efficiency of rhizobacteria isolated from Scirpus californicus and Typha dominguensis for the reduction of COD in urban wastewater determined under laboratory conditions, getting highest reduction levels by the rhizobacterias of TD and SC (51.24% and 49.58% respectively) with a dose of 1%v/v at 5 days at a temperature of 20°C.
