This research work evaluated the physical-mechanical properties of a PEN 85/100 hot mix asphalt mixture modified with iron slag to replace fine aggregate compared to a standard PEN 85/100 hot mix asphalt mixture, prepared with aggregates from the Morro Blanco – Pisac, Calca, Cusco, and PEN 85/100 asphalt cement from the asphalt plant of the Regional Government of Cusco. The execution process of this research work was carried out in two stages: obtaining the optimum asphalt content for the standard asphalt mix and obtaining the optimum asphalt content of the modified asphalt mix for the different percentages of iron slag (17%, 20%, 23%, 26%) according to the Asphalt Institute's method. According to the Marshall design, hot mix asphalt designs with optimum asphalt content were prepared: for the standard design of 6.23%, for the modified hot mix asphalt with 17% slag replacing fine aggregate of 6.06%, for the modified hot mix asphalt with 17% slag replacing fine aggregate of 6.06%, for the modified hot mix asphalt with 20% slag replacing fine aggregate 6.13%, for the modified hot mix asphalt with 23% slag replacing fine aggregate 5.70% and for the modified hot mix asphalt with 26% slag replacing fine aggregate 6.05%. Physical properties were evaluated, such as: volumetric parameters and unit weight; mechanical properties, such as: stability, flow, stability-flow ratio and resistance to simple compression. From the evaluation of the physical-mechanical parameters detailed above, it was determined that the PEN 85/100 hot mix asphalt with an optimum asphalt content of 6.05% modified with 26% iron slag in replacement of fine aggregate provides better benefits compared to the design of the PEN 85/100 hot mix with an optimum asphalt content of 6.23% of the standard design, since it has values that are within the ranges stipulated in the general technical specifications for construction EG-2013 and regulation C.E.010 for urban pavements of the national building regulations (RNE) of Peru.
