Introduction: In various investigations it has been seen how patients with hypothyroidism usually present depressive symptoms, but if they receive adequate treatment they may present fewer depressive symptoms than hypothyroid patients who do not receive treatment. Objective: To determine the association between the presence of depressive symptoms and poorly controlled hypothyroidism in hypothyroid patients at the Sergio Bernales Hospital, Lima - Peru. Materials and methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out in which 278 patients between 18 and 65 years old with hypothyroidism from the Sergio Bernales Hospital participated. Data on the patients' hypothyroid status were collected from their medical records, the PHQ-9 survey was used to evaluate their depressive symptoms, and Stata version 17 was used for data analysis. For univariate or descriptive analysis, percentages and frequencies, regarding the bivariate analysis, the relationship of the dependent or outcome variable, which is symptoms of depression, and the independent or exposure variable, which is control, in hypothyroid patients was evaluated using chi square and finally, in the multivariate analysis, regression was used. robust variance poisson. Results: An association was found between poor control of hypothyroidism and the presence of depressive symptoms since in the bivariate analysis a p value of less than 0.05 was found. Similarly, in terms of time of illness, an association was also found with the dependent variable. On the other hand, in the multivariate analysis, control of hypothyroidism (p < 0.001), duration of hypothyroidism illness (p = 0.001) and type of occupation (p = 0.021) when having a p < 0.05, an association was found with the presence of symptoms. depressives so they were used in the adjusted analysis, resulting in only the control of hypothyroidism (p<0.001) having an association. Conclusions: An association between poorly controlled hypothyroidism and the presence of depressive symptoms was found in both the bivariate and multivariate analysis. On the other hand, in the multivariate analysis an association was found with the control variables of time of illness and type of occupation.
