The present research work consisted of building and evaluating an electrocoagulation prototype to remove BOD, COD, TSS, oils and fats, and ammoniacal nitrogen from a residual effluent from a dairy industry with the aim of guaranteeing compliance with the guidelines of the Maximum Allowable Values (VMA). The evaluation of the prototype was based on determining the current intensity, the reaction time and the type of electrodes that removed the greatest amount of turbidity from the residual water. The experimental tests provided that statistically the optimal parameters were 7A current, 30-minute time and aluminum-aluminum electrodes. After this evaluation, the prototype was operated with these parameters to quantify the percentage of removal of the mentioned contaminants. This final test was carried out with 3 repetitions since the residual water was very heterogeneous. The average removal percentages for each contaminant were the following: 55,3% (DBO); 51,9% (DQO); 66,7% (SST) and 91,1% (oils and fats); while in the case of ammoniacal nitrogen, this presented an average percentage increase of 38,7%.
