Four studies with paiche (Arapaima gigas) were conducted to determine the digestibility of dry matter, fat, protein, and gross energy of protein and energy ingredients, (Study I); the productive response of diets with replacement of prime fish meal by soybean meal (Study II); the digestible protein requirement (Study III); and the digestible energy requirement (Study IV). The digestibility study used the indirect method with chromic oxide as the inert marker (0.5%) and the replacement of 30% of the reference diet by each of the protein test ingredients, 40% in the case of the energy ingredients, and 8% replacement of the soybean oil. To determine the digestible protein and digestible energy requirements, two methods were used, the empirical dose-response method, considering weight gain and feed efficiency as measurement parameters, whose results were statistically evaluated using analysis of variance (ANOVA), broken line and second order polynomial regression. The second method used was the factorial approach to know the protein and digestible energy requirement for maintenance and growth. The results obtained showed higher apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) for fish meal, compared to soybean meal and lower for wheat meal. The digestible energy intake found for fish meal was 4.34 Mcal/kg, soybean meal 3.67, wheat middlings 2.24 and soybean oil 9.19 Mcal/kg, on a dry basis. The digestible and total protein requirement, obtained by second order polynomial regression, was 47% and 52%, respectively. The digestible energy requirement determined was 4.94 Mcal/kg of feed, with R2 = 0.98. The optimal PT: ED and PD: ED ratios to promote growth and efficient feed use were 105 and 95 g/Mcal, respectively. The equations obtained by the factorial approach to estimate protein and digestible energy requirement for maintenance and growth were: P = 1.0409W0.80 + 0.3404 G and ED= 12.9272 W0.80 + 3.4604 G
