OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the type of therapeutic management of mild COVID is associated with respiratory complications in patients from rural areas of Piura 2021. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Analytical-cross-sectional retrospective study with collection of secondary data using medical records from health centers in Chipillico and surrounding areas with sample collection using the Google Forms virtual platform for data collection form and its association with a significance level of p<0.05 for the corresponding variables. RESULTS: Males represented 52.73% and females 47.27% of the patients, with statistically significant differences. Additionally, the most representative age group was 31 to 45 years old with 80.91%. No significant differences were found among the origin villages of the patients. The most prevalent comorbidities were obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and asthma, with statistically significant differences. The most common duration of illness was 5 to 10 days. Regarding self-medication, 82.27% practiced it, significantly higher than those who did not. The association between self-medication and respiratory complications was significant, especially in cases of persistent fever, desaturation-hypoxemia, pneumonia, and death, highlighting male sex and age over 34 years as factors associated with self-medication and respiratory complications. CONCLUSION: The type of therapeutic management of mild COVID is associated with respiratory complications in patients from rural areas of Piura 2021
