Existing theory in the field of Translation Studies regarding the translation of Chinese phraseology and cultural references recognizes the problematic case often represented by such elements for professional translation and, specially, subtitling. On the other hand, it is possible to affirm that the phenomenon of fansubbing occurring on Asian audiovisual products has been gaining prominence both within the entertainment industry and in the academic research field. Its disruptive nature and the greater degree of freedom provided by fansubbing to internet users establish it as a practice that significantly differs from its professional counterpart, which would also be reflected in the product offered by both subtitling modalities. For this reason, and considering the recognized knowledge gaps related to the fansubbing of Chinese products into Spanish, this research focuses on the fansubs and professional subtitles of phraseology and cultural references in the series The Untamed from Chinese to Spanish. Thus, a series of objectives seeking to answer the main question of how phraseology and cultural references have been translated from Chinese into Spanish has been set. To meet this goal, the content analysis and contrastive text analysis techniques will be employed to explore contextual and cultural aspects within the series, as well as the variety of techniques employed in both versions aiming to reconstruct said elements.
