The objective of this research work is of a qualitative approach, as well as the design is ethnographic, whose type of study is case. To carry out the process of the units of analysis, ten interviews with parents are contemplated. These samples were processed through the use of the data analysis technique, the Atlas.ti software, in its version 8. The general objective of the research is to identify the role played by the family in the formation of the reading habit of students in a public educational institution. Of this, two categories were analyzed: the family role as the first, which includes parenting, communication, volunteering, learning at home, participation and decision-making, and collaboration with the community; in the same way, and the reading habit as a second, which includes the reading frequency, the reading time, the reading materials and the acquisition of texts. In conclusion, the disarticulation that exists between the family role and reading habit indicators is summarized, since it can be interpreted that although it is true that parents assume different roles regarding the educational development of their children, these do not necessarily materialize in objective indicators that promote the reading habit.
