This study aimed to describe the levels of metacognitive knowledge and its relation to academic performance in university students in order to determine whether or not there is any degree of influence between these elements. The approach used was quantitative, with a descriptive correlational design. The instrument to measure the dependent variables was an inventory of metacognitive strategies. For the validation and reliability effects of the instruments, the Cronbach Alpha coefficient 0,897 (High Validity) was used. The representative sample was constituted by 109 students of the I cycle of Environmental Engineering of the Private University "Alas Peruanas". The data collection was done through a survey that accumulates the information of the two variables under study. Among the most important conclusions we can say that there is a relationship between the variables according to the coefficient r = 0.692, that is, average positive correlation, according to the correlation indexes, between Metacognition and the academic performance in the students of the I cycle of Environmental Engineering of the University "Alas Peruanas". The statistical analysis of the data obtained allowed us to arrive at the following conclusion: There is a significant relationship between metacognition and academic performance in students of the "Alas Peruanas" Private University.
