The objective of this research work was the professional competencies in digital journalism of journalists. It is a research carried out within the qualitative approach, being a basic type of research, with a grounded theory design and using the heuristic and hermeneutic method. The objective is to determine what it is and what the professional skills of journalists are and what digital journalism is, how the transformation and convergence to cyberjournalism occurred and what the professional profile of the journalist should be in the current circumstances. To achieve these concerns, the updated bibliography on the subject has been reviewed. The results of this research are supported by the study plans of the journalism programs of the universities and the interviews with those responsible for digital journalism at the newspapers El Comercio and La República. In short: the training of future professionals in digital journalism is already taking place through the application of general skills and skills of the specialty and is no longer based on objectives. Regarding training in digital journalism, it has already been carried out since 1995 in the aforementioned digital newspapers. In relation to the transformation and convergence to digital journalism, greater specialization is still required, as required by the labor market. The professional profile of journalists must also be updated according to the advancement of technology, taking into account that currently digital journalism requires journalists with digital skills.
