The objective of this study has been to analyze the causal correlation that exists between motivation and attitudes towards the professional career of Primary Education and the academic performance of university students. A total of 181 students from the Professional School of Primary and Intercultural Education from the University of Sciences and Humanities participated in the study. To achieve the research objectives, two scales were designed and validated, one to measure motivation and the other to measure the attitude towards the professional career of Primary Education. The academic performance was measured using the records of grades (final weighted average of the academic cycle) of each of the students who were part of the sample. The results determined that there is evidence of a significant causal relationship between the level of motivation and attitudes towards the professional career and academic performance. There is also evidence of a statistically significant relationship between the level of motivation and attitude towards a professional career. There is proof of a significant relationship between the level of motivation towards a professional career and academic performance; likewise, this relationship was found for the attitudes. A significant causal relationship between levels of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation towards a professional career and academic performance was observed as well. Finally, it was revealed a significant causal relationship between the levels of cognitive, affective and behavioral attitude towards a professional career and academic performance. To conclude, it can be indicated that high levels of motivation and positive attitudes towards the professional career of Primary Education behave as good predictors of academic performance at the university.
