The present research aimed to determine the relationship between problem solving and the development of mathematical competencies in students of the first grade of secondary education of the Experimental College of Application of the UNE. The study is based on the quantitative approach, whose applied method is the hypothetical deductive one. To collect information, an observation guide was developed to evaluate the problem solving variable and a written test developed and validated by the MINEDU was used to evaluate the development of mathematical skills variable. Both instruments were taken from a sample of 156 students of the first grade of secondary education of the Experimental College of Application of the UNE. These results statistically indicate that there is a moderate positive relationship (spearman rho = 0.468) between problem solving and the development of mathematical competencies in students of the first grade of secondary education of the Experimental College of Application of the UNE. Regarding the significance ρ =, 000 <, 05; Thus; the alternative hypothesis is approved and the null hypothesis is rejected.
