Resumen: Las personas en la ciudad de Arequipa, Perú, están en constante riesgo de rabia transmitida por perros. En Arequipa, las campañas de vacunación canina no alcanzan las coberturas necesarias y el virus de la rabia persiste en las poblaciones no vacunadas de perros con dueño. Además, el programa de vacunación no incluye a los perros sin dueño, y en Arequipa la presencia de perros sin dueño asilvestrados representan un riesgo único para las comunidades periurbanas. En la primera investigación se estudió familias del distrito de Alto Selva Alegre (ASA) que habían vacunado previamente a sus perros. El objetivo fue determinar si el abandono de la participación en subsiguientes campañas de vacunación antirrábicas caninas estuvo asociado a la presencia o el número de niños menores de 5 años en la vivienda y a otras variables a nivel de vivienda. No se encontró asociación entre el abandono de la participación en las campañas de vacunación antirrábicas caninas y la presencia o el número de niños menores de 5 años después de controlar por otras variables. Sin embargo, sí se encontró una asociación entre el abandono de la participación en las campañas de vacunación antirrábicas caninas y el número de perros en la vivienda y el conocimiento sobre la campaña ese año. En la segunda investigación se estudió una población de perros asilvestrados que usa como recursos alimenticios los residuos orgánicos de los basurales en las afueras de la ciudad. Durante las restricciones por la pandemia del COVID-19 los residuos orgánicos que abastecían a estos perros disminuyeron. El objetivo de este estudio fue examinar si hubo cambios poblacionales en perros asilvestrados antes y durante las restricciones por la pandemia del COVID-19. Se visitó mensualmente las zonas periurbanas del distrito de Alto Selva Alegre donde se reportaron perros asilvestrados y se registró la presencia mensual de cuevas con evidencia de perros asilvestrados. Se estimaron cambios en las poblaciones de perros asilvestrados durante las restricciones por la pandemia. Se encontró asociación entre las restricciones por la pandemia y un menor número de evidencia de perros asilvestrados, número de jaurías, camadas, perros vivos solitarios y perros muertos. Mientras existan poblaciones de perros asilvestrados excluidos de los programas de vacunación y perros con dueño que dejan de ser vacunados, será difícil alcanzar la cobertura de vacunación necesaria para controlar la rabia canina en la ciudad de Arequipa y reducir el riesgo de rabia humana mediada por perro.
People in Arequipa city, Peru, are at constant risk of rabies transmitted by dogs. In Arequipa, the annual canine rabies vaccination campaigns do not reach the recommended coverage and rabies virus persists in unvaccinated owned-dog populations. In addition, the vaccination campaigns focus only on owned dogs, and in Arequipa the presence of feral dogs represents a unique risk for peri-urban communities. The first research focused on families in Alto Selva Alegre (ASA) district with previously vaccinated dogs. The first research aimed to determine whether abandonment of participation in following canine rabies vaccination campaigns was associated with the presence or number of children under 5 years of age in the dog's household and other household variables. Association between participation abandonment of canine rabies vaccination campaigns and the presence or number of children under 5 years of age in the dog's household was not found, after controlling by other variables. Nevertheless, there was association between participation abandonment of canine rabies vaccination campaigns and the number of dogs in the household and the knowledge about the campaign that year. The second research focused on a feral dog population that uses like food resources the organic waste from garbage dumps on the outskirts of the city. During the confinements caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the organic waste that supplied these dogs decreased. The aim of the second study was to examine whether there were population changes in feral dogs before and during the restrictions because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Peri-urban areas in ASA were feral dogs had been reported were visited monthly and monthly presence of caves with evidence of feral dogs were recorded. Changes in the feral dogs’ populations during the pandemic restrictions were estimated. There was association between pandemic restrictions and a lower evidence of feral dogs, pack, litter, single live dogs and dead dogs. As long as feral dog population remain excluded from the vaccination programs and owned-dogs stop being vaccinated, will be difficult to reach the mandatory vaccination coverage to control canine rabies in Arequipa and reduce the risk of rabies transmitted by dogs.
